GVF Research Project to Help Reduce Congestion Along Route 422 Corridor

In collaboration with Temple University’s Center for Sustainable Communities and CFA Consultants, GVF was successful in securing a $200,000 PennDOT research grant to conduct a US 422 Transportation Demand Management (TDM) study. The research project utilized GVF’s transportation expertise to help reduce congestion and improve air quality along the US 422 Corridor through more effective TDM implementation.

The study analyzed past TDM efforts, evaluated the barriers that have prevented TDM from being more effective in addressing traffic congestion, and developed a set of policy recommendations on TDM best practices to be adapted for the US 422 Corridor. The research team and study drew the attention of former Pennsylvania Secretary of Transportation, Barry J. Schoch, as GVF and the project team were asked to present to the Secretary and PennDOT’s senior leadership.

GVF facilitated two workshops in December 2014 along the corridor to engage transportation professionals and the public on the potential for more effective TDM implementation. The TDM recommendations made by the research team have the potential to provide low cost and effective strategies to help reduce peak period congestion and reduce the environmental impacts of travel in the Corridor.

GVF was a featured speaker at TriCounty Area Chamber of Commerce’s membership breakfast, titled “The Road Untraveled,” on March 5, 2015. This presentation highlighted ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects along Route 422 and discussed tools that can be used to reduce congestion while also creating a more sustainable future for the region’s corridor.

The policy brief is located on the new commuter resource website, www.wearetdm.com, which was designed by GVF. This site, which highlights transportation demand management (TDM), is a one-stop shop of information, or tools, so people can learn what their alternatives are to driving alone. Whether someone is just tired of sitting in traffic or looking for the closet trail connection, this website will help them find the information they need to help save time, money and a better way to commute.

Celebrating our 25th Anniversary, GVF is a not-for-profit organization created to advocate and promote a viable transportation network for the region’s economic vitality. To maximize awareness and develop sustainable support, we partner with public and private entities. GVF's mission is to achieve a desirable quality of life and a healthy, competitive economic environment by developing multi-faceted transportation strategies.
